Beef Kala Bhuna Recipe

Kala bhuna is a spicy and flavorful Bangladeshi dish made with tender chunks of beef, spices, and tomatoes. Here’s a recipe for kala bhuna:

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg beef, cut into small chunks
  • 4-5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3-4 onions, finely chopped
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger paste
  • 2-3 green chilies, chopped
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4-5 cardamom pods
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 3-4 tomatoes, chopped
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Heat the oil in a large pot or a wok over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onions and fry until it becomes golden brown color.
  2. Add the minced garlic, ginger paste, and chopped green chilies. Stir for one minute or two until fragrant.
  3. Add the beef chunks and fry for 10-15 minutes until they are browned on all sides. You can also use pressure cooking to soften the beef quickly before adding it to the pan.
  4. Add the bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix everything together and stir for a minute or two.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and mix well. Cook for another 10-15 minutes until the tomatoes are soft and the beef is cooked through. You may need to add a splash of water to prevent the mixture from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  6. Cover the pot and let it simmer for another 10-15 minutes until the gravy thickens. Adjust the seasoning as per your taste. You can also add a pinch of sugar to balance the flavors.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves for decoration and serve the hot kala bhuna with rice or roti.

Tips:

  • Make sure to use good quality beef that is tender and fresh.
  • You can adjust the spice levels according to your preference by increasing or decreasing the amount of red chili powder and green chilies.
  • Use a heavy bottomed pot or a wok to ensure that the beef cooks evenly.
  • Don’t skimp on the frying time, as it helps to enhance the flavor of the beef.
  • Adding a teaspoon of ghee or butter towards the end of cooking can add a rich flavor to the dish.

Enjoy your delicious and spicy beef kala bhuna!
